This tradition was originated by the ancient Indians with a holy purpose. Its intention is not to be an indication of a particular religion or caste or creed alone.
Brahmin: They used to apply a "Sandal paste" mark signifying purity, as their profession was of a priestly or academic nature.
Kshatriya: They used to apply a "Red kumkum" mark signifying valor, as they belonged to the warrior races.
Vaishya: They used to apply a "Yellow kesar" or "Turmeric" mark signifying prosperity, as they were a businessman or trader devoted to the creation of wealth.
Sudra: They used to apply a "Black bhasma", "Kasturi" or "Charcoal" mark signifying their service, as they were supported the work of the other three divisions.
Benefits of applying TILAK
That is why when we get worried, heat generates and results the energy on that spot to get lost. This causes headache.
But the Tilak, protects us by preventing energy loss, as it always cools the forehead. It also invokes a feeling of holiness in the wearer and others.
How the TILAK is applied?
Hence, the Tilak is a blessing of the God and a protection against wrong forces and tendencies.
It serves only the purpose of decoration.
Hence wearing Tilak or Mark on the forehead between the two brows has its own sacred significance.
