Among these there is a sect known as Aghori. The word "Aghori" means "non terrifying" in Sanskrit. There origination is from the ancient Vedic system though they do not follow the system. They live in the North part of India, mostly in Varanasi or Kasi. They dedicate themselves completely to lord Shiva and follow cannibalism. They will be always detached to all mortal attachments.
Their activities and lifestyle will be found awkward to a common man but it is their way of life.
They believe that everything in this universe is created by the creator, so nothing is impure. They consider everything including human flesh as God.
According to them a human will be like a dead body (Shava) with worldly attachments, so they try to become alive (Shiva) by leaving human pleasures and involving themselves in the rituals of Aghori.
Life style of Aghoris
Aghoris deem that they are a part of Lord Shiva and most of them wears nothing except the ash of burnt dead bodies. Some wrap their waist part with a piece of cloth and wear skull garland. They carry the skull of dead body as a bowl for begging.
They live in the burial grounds as that is the final destination for a body. Some of the Aghoris roam on the streets naked, to represent the moral of detachment to the people who involve themselves completely in this illusion of the world.
Sometimes they walk on the streets with the skull as a bowl. They eat whatever they find like spoiled food, food from the bins, animal's dead bodies, even urine etc., as a part of their ritual in their starting stages.
It is believed and followed by the Hindus that if a body of the dead person is burnt then their soul will get peace. As a part of this they burn dead bodies near river Ganga which consider as holy river by them. Or in the case of the body burnt in other parts of the world, they bring the ash and mix it in the river.
Sometimes when the body is being burnt by Hindus, it floats in the water and carried away by the river. In such cases, these half burnt bodies are pulled by Aghoris. They carry it to their ashrams, perform some practices for the peace of dead body's soul. Then cut the body into pieces and have the raw flesh by some groups, roast on open flame by some other groups of Aghoris. Once they attain to a certain level, they restrict themselves to eat human flesh and do meditation by sitting on the corpse. This is the identification of their raised consciousness to the level of Lord Shiva.
The main intention behind these kind of rituals are, they should completely lose interest in body attachments and should not consider that body is everything.
They attain many siddhis or powers as they advance. Slowly they even get the power to control the environment but they will not do so as they obey nature as a mother. Their words will be highly powerful and definitely become true.
Because of their peculiar activities and rituals, some specs of Hindus consider them as non-Hindus.
Aghoris aspect of life
Aghoris believe that your type of food does not matter but the outcome produced by us such as lust, anger, revenge etc matters a lot. So they consume flesh without second opinion.
Even though they consume the burnt dead body flesh, their bodies are not burnt after their death. They are left in the river Ganga as they believe that, this act makes them to reach Lord Shiva.
How to become Aghori
Once a person gets accepted by the Guru then that person should get detached to all the materialistic attachments and lead life according to the Aghori culture.
